Encounters
The Future of European Integration, Political Economy and Culture: left critical perspectives
25/26/27/28. IX 2012
Magacin, Kraljevića Marka 4, Beograd
In countries that have emerged from the dissolution of Yugoslavia, the global crisis of the capitalist system represents utterly predatory moves in the demolition and the transformation of the former socialist system and benefits that its citizens fought for and had been creating for decades. European integration has become the mantra of all political structures within the region. Those who advocate it unquestioningly implement the process of privatization and austerity measures, while those who are against it while those who are opposing it, by doing so, continously generate nationalism within post-Yugoslavian society. With their actions, both currents contribute to strengthening of neofascism, which is present in Europe for a few decades now through the rise of right-wing politics. At the same time, both options are based on carrying out of historical revisionism and a complete denial of the socialist past. These politics have led to a disastrous social status of people, to the loss of perspective for the youth and to the extreme poverty for the elderly population. The question is whether there is an alternative to these politics?
Of course, this is not a new issue and for many years now various groups and individuals have been working on articulating critiques and finding answers that would be based on Marxist theories and left politics. Precisely that is the basic intention of the Encounters that will gather participants from the region, initiatives, formal and informal groups and individuals who participate in the production of critical analyses, joint work and discussions, as well as solidarity actions. Encounters represent a contribution to strengthening the regional connections in order to create a different perspective in addressing the political, economic and cultural problems of the societies of the former Yugoslavia.
As part of the Encounters, we will, through panels, lectures, reading groups and informal gatherings, discussissues of the EU crisis and the debt crisis in the Balkans, the policies in former Yugoslavian countries in the last twenty years, the ideological influences on cultural production and its consequences, issues of labor relations, as well as of the possibilities of creating a left political alternative.
We invite you to join us in socializing and working on exploring these topics.
